Joann Turner Johnson was born on September 7, 1952, to the late Joe Turner and Ruby Turner. On February 16, 2026, she answered her final call, leaving behind a legacy stitched together with love, laughter, service, and a little bit of sass.
A faithful member of Christ Temple, Joann lived her life grounded in faith and community. On February 14, 1970, she united in marriage with Ralph “Chinney” Johnson, beginning a love story that would shape generations. From that union came two daughters, who became the pride and purpose of her life.
Joann was a Licensed Practical Nurse for more than 50 years, dedicating her hands and her heart to long term care. She was not just a nurse by profession, she was a nurse by calling. Families trusted her. Colleagues relied on her. Her expertise was sought after, and her presence brought comfort in moments that mattered most. She cared deeply, worked tirelessly, and served faithfully.
But beyond the scrubs and the stethoscope was a woman who was the heartbeat of her neighborhood. Joann was the hostess. Her home was the gathering place. If there were cards to be played, bingo numbers to be called, music to be turned up, food to be shared, or laughter to be had, you could count on her door being open. She loved the thrill of a good bingo game, the focus, the anticipation, the joy of calling out a win. In many ways, she lived life the same way. Present. Engaged. Ready for whatever number came next.
She was a pillar of her community, steady and strong, with a heart as big as her tongue was sharp. She told it like it was, and you loved her for it.
Her smile lit up a room. Her laugh lingered long after she left it.
And if you ever saw her coming down the street in that flamingo pink car, you knew exactly who it was. With “Widow B” proudly displayed, LPN shining on the side, and stickers of a bumblebee, a nurse, and a butterfly, Joann drove through life boldly and unapologetically herself. She did not shrink. She showed up bright.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph “Chinney” Johnson; her father, Joel Turner; her brother, Kelvin Turner; her grandmother, Lady Patience Turner and special friend, Sandra Kaye Robinson.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Stacy (Phillip) White and Amanda Johnson; her grandchildren, Sierra (Brandan) Chaney, Phillip (Kayli) White III, and Trinity White; her great grandchildren, Emberylnn and Evander Chaney, Kyland and Isaiah White; her brothers, Carl Turner, Anthony Turner, Brent Turner, Edward Turner, and Kenneth Turner; her sisters, Nell Turner, Cora Sue (Teddy) Williams, Jill (Michael) Crow, and Hope (Alfred) Gaskin; her aunt, Altha Richard; special niece, Jessica Turner and her loving companion, Ronnie Beckless. Extended Family Betty Johnson, Kim Stegall and Stephanie Stegall-Hipp. Along with a host of extended family, friends, neighbors, and all who were blessed to know her.
Joann’s life was full. Full of faith. Full of family. Full of fire. And though her last number has been called here on earth, the love she poured into others will continue to echo for generations.
